The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard
– Two stars (out of four)
– Rated R for sexual content, nudity, pervasive language and some drug material.
– Who is going to like it: Any who likes Ari Gold from Entourage and the Adam McKay/Will Ferrell duo (Step Brothers, Talladega Nights, Anchorman)
It’s like Used Cars on vulgar crack
For the past little while, there have been lots of smaller R-rated comedies. They keep flooding out. Some are great, some forgettable. Sadly, while The Goods is packed full of great laughs, it’s one of the forgettable ones. Although it wont stand the test of time, at least it will make you laugh hard for the 90 minutes you’re watching it.
When Ben Selleck’s used car dealership is in danger of foreclosure, he calls in Don Ready (Jeremy Piven, Entourage) and his savvy team of used car liquidators (consisting of Anchorman‘s David Koechner, Mission: Impossible‘s Ving Rhames and Step Brothers‘ Kathryn Hahn) to sell 211 cars in the most un-ethical way over a three-day fourth-of-July weekend.
What makes The Goods worth watching at least once is the unique flavor of comedy that each actor brings to the show. Piven basically plays his Ari Gold character from Entourage and Koechner his Champ from Anchorman – which is perfect considering they’re hilarious. Rhames plays a big and tough, yet sensitive and longing lover. But Hahn steals the show. To quote Tyler Durden, “You wont believe the [stuff] that comes out of that woman’s mouth.” It’s shocking and hilarious at the same time. You never grow tired of her.
Also playing funny bit parts are The Hangover and The Office‘s Ed Helms, Tony Hale (Buster from Arrested Development), Ken Jeong (The Hangover, Role Models), The Office‘s Craig Robinson and Flight of the Conchords‘ Kristen Schaal.
While The Goods is far from being the funnier of the movies this year – hats off to I Love You, Man and The Hangover – it’s still pretty funny. Maybe not worth full price, definitely matinée or dollar movie.
