Russell Crowe makes his directorial debut and stars in The Water Diviner, a film which earned three Australian Academy Awards, including Best Film. It is also the highest-grossing Australian film of 2014. Inspired by real events, The Water Diviner is an epic and inspiring story of one man’s life-changing journey of discovery as he searches for the bodies of his three beloved sons killed in the battle of Gallipoli in Turkey in 1915. Crowe chose to direct this project because of his passion for the subject matter. While Americans may be less familiar with the battle of Gallipoli, this story of grief, love, hope and redemption will resonate with audiences everywhere. It offers a thought-provoking and emotional look at the unbreakable ties of family and the cost of war on both sides.
The film’s international ensemble cast also includes Olga Kurylenko, Yilmaz Erdogan, Cem Yilmaz, Jai Courtney, Ryan Corr, James Fraser, Ben O’Toole, Jacqueline McKenzie and Isabel Lucas. The Water Diviner opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, April 24 – one day before the 100th anniversary of the Anzac (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) landings at Gallipoli.
